Ann Persona 5: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Empowerment

ann persona 5

When I first delved into the world of Persona 5, one character immediately stood out to me – Ann Takamaki. By day, she’s a biracial transfer student and fashion model, but by night, she becomes a secret undercover superhero. Ann’s story is one of self-discovery, confronting societal labels, and pushing the boundaries of her own abilities.

Battling Stereotypes and Finding Acceptance

Upon meeting Ann, the player witnesses female classmates engaging in gossip about her perceived promiscuity, influenced by stereotypes of Americans being aggressive and lewd in Japan. However, as the story unfolds, we learn that Ann is different in many ways. She is only one-quarter American, with blonde hair and green eyes, yet with a traditionally Japanese surname. The whispers and assumptions made about her due to her Western appearance conveniently overlook the fact that she is mostly Japanese, just like her peers. Furthermore, her family is absent from her life, leaving her to navigate her new environment alone. The isolation she experiences changes when she encounters a group of students who have also been pushed to the margins.

The Power of the Metaverse and the Phantom Thieves

Ann and her newfound friends discover the existence of the Metaverse, a cognitive dream world that manifests humanity’s deepest fears and desires. In this realm, they explore nightmarish dungeons born from the twisted minds of criminals. The group realizes that by stealing treasures, they can cause these individuals to have a change of heart and confess their crimes in the real world. United as the Phantom Thieves, they embark on a mission to reform criminals across various walks of life.

A Personal Connection

On the surface, I couldn’t be more different from Ann. As a 39-year-old freelancer in suburban New Jersey, the glitz and glamour of Tokyo were worlds away. The carefree attitude of a high schooler seemed like a distant memory, and I could never picture myself on a runway. However, Ann’s experiences resonated with me deeply. As a result of her mixed heritage, she constantly faces mistrust and judgment from her peers, who make assumptions about her based on her background. The other female students slander her with baseless accusations of promiscuity, even going as far as accusing her of involvement with a teacher at the school, someone she barely knows. One male student crudely insults her, calling her the teacher’s “bitch” simply because he saw them together, while also expressing his own interest in her.

Ann lacks confidence due to the constant teasing at school, finding solace in her modeling career as a way to cope with the way she is treated because of her appearance. However, even in her chosen domain, she remains self-conscious and uncomfortable with unwanted attention. In a particularly amusing scene, she awkwardly enters an artist’s studio wearing multiple outfits layered on top of each other when Yusuke Kitagawa, a future member of the Phantom Thieves, asks her to pose nude. Despite being a model, Ann prefers to control how she presents herself and dislikes being objectified.

A Journey of Redemption and Empowerment

Ann’s journey as a Phantom Thief marks a turning point in her life. As she learns to summon her persona and engages in battle, she acquires Carmen, a powerful fire elemental. Carmen represents the glamorous and seductive opera heroine, a femme fatale revered throughout history. Through embracing Carmen, Ann confronts the degrading rumors surrounding her reputation and the outsider label thrust upon her. She embraces her own power, armed with a dominatrix catsuit that symbolizes her newfound strength.
