I gotta watch SOMETHING while I’m waiting for Chainsaw Man season 2. You know why I love anime? Because I don’t like looking at real people. Real people are ugly. Just look at this guy. Gross. I’ve seen a lot of horrible things in anime, but never seen anything as depraved as THAT. Aside from sparing me a glance at the horrors of the real world, anime entertains me with the horrors of a fictional one! And while the devil haunted urban hellscapes of Chainsaw Man are pretty scawie, the endless cityscape filled with masked and murderous assassins featured in High Rise Invasion might actually be even SCAWIER. You have to run from hails of bullets AND you can never find parking. A fate worse than death.

What is High-Rise Invasion about again?

Life is hard enough for Yuri Honjo—a Japanese high school student. She’s got a lot of responsibilities! Juggling schoolwork, friends, and taking care of her little brother Rika! Life really doesn’t do her any favors once she finds herself trapped in an infinite cityscape filled with high-rise apartments and masked assassins. These assassins’ have one goal in mind, to hunt down and kill anyone unfortunate enough to be trapped in this high-rise world. The strange thing is, it seems that the masked assailants are driven to kill not because of lack of access to therapy, but because the MASKS THEMSELVES seem to be bloodthirsty. For fans of old Zelda games, it looks like we’ve got a Majora’s Mask situation on our hands. And we all know how that turned out, the world almost got destroyed after the moon nearly plowed into it.

Poor Yuri not only has to survive the constant onslaught of the masked people, but she also has to track down her little brother, who is trapped in the high-rise world as well. Yuri is accompanied by other survivors of varying degrees of trustworthiness, and she has to navigate ever-shifting alliances with the other people who are trapped with her. Naturally, as the protagonist of the series, part of her description involves figuring out what the deal is with this infinite city, and why she’s been trapped there in the first place.

So what’s going on with season 2?

The truth is, we just don’t know. The internet is full of speculation, but no one has any concrete facts yet. Almost makes you feel like one of those poor saps stuck in high rise world doesn’t it? It’s likely that Netflix is waiting to renew the series based on the response it gets from audiences. As of right now, that response is mixed. Some fans love the show, others think that the often genre-switching series hasn’t quite hit its stride yet. I’m sorry to say, but your guess is as good as mine.
