Remember when Boruto first came out and received mixed reviews? Well, unfortunately, not much has changed since then. It’s now 2023, and the question remains – is Boruto still bad? Yes, it’s still disappointing.

Boruto was already a lackluster sequel to begin with, but somehow, it has managed to become even worse. The series is plagued with numerous filler episodes, terrible pacing, disastrous production, and inconsistent power levels.

As a fan of Naruto, the only reason I stuck around to watch Boruto was to see the original characters grow and mature. However, it has been almost six years since its release, and that’s still the only aspect that keeps me interested.

Major Problems with Boruto: What’s Wrong with the Anime?

1. Endless Fillers

The recent chapters of the manga feel like watching a train wreck in slow motion. There is nothing new added to the story, causing fans to lose interest.

And don’t even get me started on the anime! It’s filled with filler episodes, and only a small portion of it actually progresses the main plot. While Naruto had its fair share of filler episodes, at least it maintained a solid storyline.

Many fans have dropped the series until something substantial happens. Boruto is an overall mediocre show, and no one wants to invest in a sequel with 700 episodes.

2. Pacing Problems

One of the major issues with Boruto is that the manga releases only 12 chapters per year. As a result, the anime has to create a lot of additional content to produce 52 episodes annually. This inconsistency in release schedules makes it difficult to maintain a consistent pace, resulting in lackluster content.

Having a monthly manga and a weekly anime is a recipe for disaster when it comes to quality. It becomes challenging to keep the story moving forward at a good pace, often making the show feel stretched out and boring.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the anime will switch to a seasonal format anytime soon. The show continues to generate significant revenue for TV Tokyo, giving them no incentive to make changes. It’s disappointing for fans who yearn for better content, but as they say, money talks.

3. Underutilized Characters

Boruto’s villains have been underwhelming compared to the ones we saw in Naruto. They lack depth and their motivations remain unclear.

The side characters in Boruto are often treated as an afterthought. Why spend multiple episodes introducing a character if they’re going to be killed off and never mentioned again?

Even some of the main characters like Sarada and Mitsuki haven’t been fully utilized to their potential. Fans were excited to see these characters in action, but they often play minor roles in the story.

4. Poor Production

Boruto’s production is a complete mess. The art and animation are seriously lacking, and even the good arcs and fights become hard to watch.

Have you seen the latest episode where Naruto looks like some weird goblin? It’s just an example of the decline in quality.

It’s been reported that the studio’s best animators were shifted over to animate the final arc of another series, Bleach. While it’s great that Bleach is receiving a killer adaptation after all these years, it’s unfortunate that Boruto had to suffer as a result.

5. Bizarre Power Scaling

The power levels in Boruto are all over the place. Sometimes a character is supposed to be incredibly powerful, but then they inexplicably lose. Fans are frustrated because the show fails to explain how the villains are defeated.

Boruto is already unbelievably strong for his age, and now even Naruto and Sasuke can destroy planets. This makes the characters seem otherworldly and removes their relatability. The excessive power scaling has taken away their charm.

What is Good About Boruto?

On the surface, the only positive aspect of Boruto is how it starts with a flashback, which keeps people invested enough to continue watching.

However, it cannot be ignored that the show explores some interesting themes. Boruto incorporates modern technologies and changes in the world while maintaining the legacy of the shinobi. Despite the conflicts that arise, the characters find their paths and figure out their ambitions.

With Sasuke as his guide, Boruto learns the lesson of never giving up and becomes a symbol of perseverance, someone who can help others in need. Similarly, Naruto plays a similar role for Sarada.

Additionally, Sasuke’s relationship with Boruto helps him bond with his father and brings them closer together.
